Helpful Tips For Using Your Slow Cooker

These tips for using your slow cooker are perfect for beginners or those of you who have been using a slow cooker for many years.

  • Buy a slow cooker based upon the needs of your family

Basically, what that means is that you don’t need to buy a huge slow cooker if there are only 2 people in your family that you’re cooking for. Slow cookers come in a variety of sizes. Make certain that you’re buying the size that suits your cooking style.

  • Resist the urge to open up the lid and see what’s going on

Every time you open up the slow cooker lid, you’re letting all the heat escape in a matter of seconds! While the slow cooker is powerful and does a great job of cooking, it takes extra time for it to build back up to the heat level it was at before you lifted up that lid. Many slow cookers now come with glass lids to help avoid this issue so that is something to think about for your needs as well.

  • If you’re adding raw potatoes to your slow cooker, make certain to add them in first

If you can’t add them in first, add them as close to the bottom of the slow cooker as possible. That way, they’re closest to the heat source and the hottest part of the slow cooker. This means that they will cook and get done as quickly as possible. When they are raw, they’re hard and will need that extra heat to get cooked thoroughly.

  • Don’t underestimate how hot the slow cooker can get

The outside of the slow cooker can get very hot to the touch, so it’s important to keep that in mind. Very much so if you have small children running around the house. Keep the slow cooker pushed back as far away from the edge of the counter as possible. You don’t want to take the chance of it being bumped or knocked off.

  • Purchase a slow cooker that is easy to read and navigate

Some slow cookers have a lot of buttons and gadgets, and if you’re going to use all of those, that’s great. However, if you’re not, make certain that you find a slow cooker that is easy to read and understand.

With these helpful tips on how to use your slow cooker, you may find that you feel more comfortable now cooking with it! Just keep in mind that the slow cooker is pretty user-friendly. The more that you cook with it, the more comfortable you’ll get.
